XP Downloads and System Restore

My system will not restore using the system restore
facility after I downloaded and installed a windows update.
It will not restore back beyond the date of the last
windows update.
This is causing me problems with rectifying a fault which
now requires a re-install of the operating system to
rectify the fault with ny CD drive.
Has anyone any knowledge of this problem.

Several Updates are known to delete the SR data because uninstallation
is not supported and you even must not get rid of the Update on this
way.
