xp doesn't shut down

For about a week or so I started to have problem with shutting down my
xp. I haven't downloaded anything new. When I choose shut down option
it just doesn't respond at all. It doesn't freeze or anything else
either, as if I never choose shut down the xp functions as usual. I am
not familiar with programing and computer specific terminology. I
checked the microsoft's page about it but couldn't figure out what
exactly I need to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
