XP doesn't recognize NTFS-formatted file system on USB mass storage device

I formatted a USB 2.0 external hard drive as an NTFS file
system under Windows 2000 Professional. When I try
reading the drive on my XP box, it sees the drive and adds
a 'mass storage' device, but it doesn't see the file
system - it considers it 'raw.' How can I
modify/configure XP so that it can read the file system?

Have you tried looking at the drive from the Disk Management screen?

I know that XP & 2000 use different versions of NTFS - but thought that XP
was backward compatible.

You could try re-formatting the disk as NTFS from the XP Disk Management
Screen - but face the risk that Windows 2000 won't be able to read it. There
may be a 2000 patch to overcome this - suggest that you look for this before
trying a format.
