XP does not start

I loaded a McAfee virus program and a download
accelerator yesterday. Download accelerator came with
bunch of pop-ups etc so I uninstalled it. Since then my
Windows XP does not load fully. I get the blue screen
with the windows XP logo, however the thumbnail that I
used to click to log on to the computer is not there any
more. I have tried safe start, last successful log on
etc. many times. Nothing workrd so far. My next step is
to reload XP losing every file in my computer so any help
is greatly appreciated.

More info needed. Does this also happen in safe mode? Have you checked the
McAfee boards? Does this have to do with removing spyware, etc that
involved the userinit.exe entry?

Without knowing more....

A User Logon Request Is Rejected Without Any Messages
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313322

If the above is not the case, this does work and has been verified:

This problem turns out to be that the Winlogon userinit entry is being set
to
"wsupdater.exe," and not "userinit.exe,".

From here, you can either opt to slave the drive and then use:

Editing the Registry for "other" Users
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_adv_reg_editing.htm

Then:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Or:

Place your XP CD in and navigate to the Recovery Console.
Change the C:\Windows prompt to: C:\Windows\System32 and copy userinit.exe
to wsaupdater.exe

Reboot into Safe Mode and modify:

change userinit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon from wsaupdater.exe, to userinit.exe,

Yes it happens in safe mode (w or w/o networking). It
also happens in last successful log on mode.

It may involve removal of spyware (my wife said she found
a lot of spyware and using adaware, spy sweeper she
removed as much as she can).

I can not access to McAfee or anything on the computer.
All I get is the blue windows xp screen (where I should
have the little user icon to click and log on) with
windows xp logo, and nothing happens after that. During
start up everything appears normal, even the scan disk
works prior to final blue xp screen. And nothing works
after that, not even cntrl+alt+del.

A friend of mine recommended to press on left shift key
to stop loading of start up programs which also did not
help in my case.

But I believe all happened after installing the download
accelerator program which resulted in tons of spywares
that made my spysweeper program crazy (would pop up every
30 sec). After uninstalling that program this started
happening.
