XP defrag probs

hi all

I'm trying to run a defrag on my PC and it all seemingly works ok. However
it only gets to about 25% before coming up with the message saying the
defrag is complete and then presenting this report:

Volume (C:)
Volume size = 114 GB
Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 92.77 GB
Free space = 21.72 GB
Percent free space = 18 %

Volume fragmentation
Total fragmentation = 21 %
File fragmentation = 41 %
Free space fragmentation = 2 %

File fragmentation
Total files = 135,173
Average file size = 928 KB
Total fragmented files = 1,084
Total excess fragments = 218,040
Average fragments per file = 2.61

Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size = 1.95 GB
Total fragments = 14,143

Folder fragmentation
Total folders = 7,968
Fragmented folders = 1
Excess folder fragments = 0

Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 168 MB
MFT record count = 146,517
Percent MFT in use = 85 %
Total MFT fragments = 4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fragments File Size Files that cannot be defragmented

<at this point, there's a list of files that range from 12 to 300 megabytes
in size....>

To me, it's obviously not finishing the job properly and finishing too
early. I've tried running the defrag in Safe Mode but the exact same thing
happens there too.

Any ideas?

cheers

I don't think you have enough free space on your drive. I never fill my
drives more than 75% of capacity.

Anyone agree?

HI Dusty

I see the same or similar message on one of my computers. Windows defrag
does not cope at all well with large files or databases. I have a few two GIG
data files which cannot be defraged by Windows. You might find the same large
files on you Harddrive? There are some third party Defrag tools which are not
bothered by Large files. Back up before using them of course. I do not think
the 21 gig free space is your problem. The free space needs to be about twice
the larges file being defraged. As windows doesn't even try to defrag large
files it is unlikely to be your problem. If you have mirrored or raid you
some time see a similar fault if the drives are not synchronizing in raid 1
or simialar mirror drive options.

Do you have more than one drive / partition? If yes please provide the
size of each and it's free space. Are they formatted as

Some measures that should help.

Increase you free space on your XP partition select Start, All
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options,
System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore points?
Restore points can be quite large.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore
on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700
mb. Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System
Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this
time find the slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and
exit. When you get to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and
exit.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point.Conclude by running Disk Defragmenter.

The routine above does not remove all unnecessary clutter from your
hard disk, especially if there is more than one user Logon,

If you are using the Norton Protected Recycle Bin or Rollback RX Pro
these can create significant free disk space issues. The programmes
create hidden folders, which can grow to colossal sizes.

If you are able to provide the information requested I would hope to
be able to further improve your situation.

Ultra large files can be better located on a volume with a larger
cluster size. possibly even on a FAT32 volume.

I can add some info in general coming from my Cryptainer PE program
specifically. With these larger file sizes, they request going with NTFS if
possible, that in any case the formatted vault should match the drive
formatting with the "default cluster sizing" selected. In my case, this
boiled down to the smallest clusters. I compress data, too.
