Some Files Couldn't Defragment

Shane Goodman

Greetings,

After running Disk Defragmenter I got a message saying "Some files on this
volume could not be defragmented". However, when I click the View Report
button, it doesn't show any files.

Why would it say that some files couldn't be defragmented, but not show
those files?

Here is the log file:

Your report indicates three fragmented files but I can only see two
identified. The pagefile and the MFT table. Do you use hibernation?

Hope this helps.

Gerry,

Hibernation is enabled, but I typically use Stand By instead of Hibernation.

What is the Pagefile and Master File Table?

Thanks,
Shane.

No better time to learn to use Google than now... ;-)

Search using Google!

Windows built-in defragmenter does not defragment the MFT, pagefile or
hibernation file.

Greetings,

The problem is from files index (OS search function - indexing service - or
another software which use it).
I got to same problem which almost droved me crazy (I tested Kaspersky AV
and mess up my entire system, MFT, usnjrln, metadata, etc).
The file/data mentioned above its supposed to be updated continuously (and
defrag - by rebuilding it, if you didn't stop the indexing service of
course).
You can very well to delete usnjrln file/data using the fsutil command (e.g.
"fsutil usn deletejournal /D C:", where C: is the partion C supposed with
that problem and can be replaced with the right letter for the partition
with this defrag error - see OS help).
If you didn't stopped the indexing service then the usnjrln data will be
recreated/replaced with a new/fresh one, but if you did stopped the indexing
service then you don't need that file/data anymore.

Yours
Laurian
