Problems like that are usually hardware, power-related, or a bad driver.

You are essentially blue-screening and are set to reboot when that happens.
On the "Advanced" tab, under "Startup and Recovery," click "Settings," then
under "System failure," uncheck the box "Automatically restart." That will
prevent it restarting and keep the blue screen up. Copy down the blue screen
error message and post it here.

The system is likely encountering a fatal error and the automatically restart option has been selected in start up and recovery options.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties/Advanced Tab/Start up and Recovery/Settings Button.

Under System Failure, uncheck the Automatically Restart option. This will allow the error to be displayed when the problem is encountered.

Check the Event Viewer for possible information. Go to start/Run and type eventvwr.msc and press OK. Click the 3 menu items on the left and look for any "X" error messages. If any are found, double click the error entry to see the details. If you find an error that is coincidng with the behavior, click the Copy Icon on the details dialog screen and paste the error details in a reply to this message.

Go to Start/Run and type msinfo32 and press OK. Click Components/Problem Devices to check for possible hardware problems.

I came across a computer where the screen just blacked out and went into
reboot mode.. the power supply, which was hopelessly inadequate anyway, was
changed, but still the same.. a motherboard change cured the problem..

If you don't get a blue screen before the black one, it is a hardware issue
and has nothing to do with Windows operation other than at each crash,
Windows files will get screwed up..

Depending on if after turning off the automatic restart you see a blue
screen error message, check the system for overheating. Open the case,
blow out the dust bunnies. Are the fans running?

Check the capacitors on the motherboard. Are any bulging or leaking?

Check the ram using these two memory testers:
Memtest86+
http://www.memtest.org/

Windows Memory Diagnostic
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Let them run for awhile, not just one pass. If errors show up replace
the memory.

Could also be the power supply or motherboard.

Having same prob - WinXP Pro 2002. Will be working along, suddenly screen
goes black, then a quick blink of a blue screen FILLED with typing (don't
even have time to make out the first 6 words, much less a sentence), then the
re-boot.

Through this newsgroup, went looking for "blue screen". Very helpful, found
how to set my pc so it won't fly by that blue screen. Also found how to look
up the event logs, but they're all gibberish, so that's one for my wizard to
use.

Went to memtest.org, found a lot of files to download, but I don't have a
clue how to choose which I need. I presume the memory diagnostic site will
have the same style to choose from. Where do I go from here? If I knew
which to download, I could have them ready for my wizard, or maybe even run
them myself one day. "Let them run for a while, not just one pass"; would a
lunch hour be long enough, or should it be overnight?

I have the same problem with my computer crashing for no reason. I have done
the advanced tab/ startup recovery thing to see what the blue screen says and
this is what the screen had on it:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer. If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error
screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these
steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in
the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for
driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor
for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or
shadowing if you need computer, Press F8 to select advanced startup option,
and then select safe mode.

Beginning dump of physical memory.
Physical memory dump complete
COntact your system administrator or technical support gruop for futher
assistance.
Can anyone help with this problem?!

Hi,

More information is required. Did you try any of the steps in the error
message? Like reducing video acceleration or disabling bios shadowing? Also,
please send the dmup file being created to me at the email address used
here. Use the subject line "per req" or it will not get to me.

Switch to Linux and forget that crap. XP is really not a very robust
operating system and so many things can force it to crash like this.

Unfortunately - and I sympathize with how upset you are - you haven't
given us enough information to get focused troubleshooting answers.
Saying "I have the same problem as the others" in a newsgroup with
1,000 new posts a day isn't useful.

It can be very hard for a non-technical person to know what to include
in a post to a tech support newsgroup. Here is a link that will help
you with that - http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

After you've read the information at that link, post back with all
pertinent details and someone will help you. Make sure to include the
Stop Error on the blue screen.

What problem, des? You didn't quote any of the original message. Best
not to post onto another old thread - called hijacking. Post a new
thread with your issue and all relevant information.

Stop Error Screen - to save computer from crashing - check for adequate disk
space (I did & it is more than plenty enough) and check for driver updates
(how?) and try changing video adapters (just installed new one the day before
- Stratitec 5 Port 480Mbps USB 2.0 Upgrade Card) and check hardware vendor
for any BIOS updates (how?) Disable BIOS memory options (afraid to, but how
& why ? and will it ill affect my ability to continue working without a
Windows Software CD ? as I am using a Shadow Copy - unknown) like caching or
shadowing. Use Safe Mode to remove or disable components. Restart computer
[F8] to select Advanced Startup options.
