XP Clean Install - Initial Login Password

I have performed a clean XP Home install five times and each time on the
initial login, it is requiring a password. I have read several posts advising
to use a blank password or use a blank password in Safe Mode. This simple
isn't working for me. I've even used to password reseting utilities that were
mentioned in other posts in this newsgroup. These utilities tell me the local
administrator account passwords are blank. However when I go to login (either
login menu) blanks simple won't work. I get a message similar to user or
account not found on domain. Well there is not domain set. No option to
change to login to any particular domain or even the workstation. Any help
would be appreciated...If I don't find a solution, I'll be forced to
roll-back to windows 98.

Thanx!

You did a clean install - you cannot "roll back to windows 98."
It's gone. And if you actually did an upgrade - how can you roll back if
you cannot log on?

So you did a clean install (wiped everything and installed XP on a new
partition you formatted using the setup) and once it is done, you cannot log
on as "administrator" in safe mode or the user(s) you setup during the
installation?

Since you did a clean install, I would suggest going through the steps
again - reinstall the OS. You have nothing to lose and I suggest you create
and give the users passwords this time when it asks. Create a few users so
you have more options. If that is what you have been doing, then all I can
think of is something is seriously corrupt with that hard drive of yours.

Please be more specific. What version of Windows XP Home you are
installing??

The assumption is that this is a new Retail boxed Windows XP (either Upgrade
version OR new install version) - purchased at your local computer retailer
(e.g. CompUSA, Fry's, OfficeDepot, OfficeMAX, Staples, BestBuy. etc.)

There are also other versions:

OEM - provided by specific computer manufacturers (e.g. Dell, HP, IBM)
Corporate volume license - rare for WinXP Home version & unlikely for home
user to see
Microsoft Development Network (MSDN) disks - again rare for home user to
have
