XP Boot-Up Stalls with HD lite on solid

Recently, started hanging when I re-boot. HD light is on solid with Windows
XP Start-up logo on screen with thermometer moving. Seems like this stall is
forever. Am not sure if it ever kicks out of it (I am too impatient to wait,
although I did wait about 10 minutes once).
If I boot into Safe Mode, it logs gagp30kx.sys and then hangs for about 3-4
minutes and then finally finishes boot.
I can boot to setup, floppy or CD with no problems. It is only Windows XP
that sees it. If I re-start from Safe Mode into Normal, it will eventually
come up OK. Some times after it is up, the HD light is on solid and response
is slow, but task manager shows nothing active.
I suspected a hardware problem, but diagnostics on CD show nothing and fact
that boot to floppy or CD programs do not see this at all leads me to believe
it is a Windows issue.

Hi Jhill,
This a sign for infection from Malware/Viruses, please do a scan online from
here:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com
http://www.sophos.com
For Anti-Adware go here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ ; for SE lavasoft for personal use
http://www.safer-networking.org/ ; for S&D spybot
Try system Repair through Repair Console, start with your CD and on the Set
up option select *R* for Repair.
Unattach all hardware to yor computer and start just with HDD, Mouse,
Keyboard and see if the issue will cure, your power supply may defective or
the Extension Cards /Cables on your Motherboard need Resetiing.
Hope this helps
Please write back
Regards
nass

Thanks.
I have run Ad-Aware and AVG scans with nothing found. I am now running
Housecall and will try the others suggested.
I will post again with results.

I'm having the same problem. It started this past weekend Saturday into
Sunday. While I can't rule out infection from a virus 100%, I don't think
that's what's going on here. I have automatic updates running on my Windows
XP (actually it's Media Center), but I'm not sure it was an update as these
tend to be on a Tuesday night.

I'm going to try popping in the Windows XP CD and do a recovery. I don't
know what could have happened to gagp30kx.sys, but a quick search on google
shows that this is not an isolated problem.
