Boot problem

T

Tim Downie

I tried out a "trial" version of Ubuntu that runs from CD on my computer
today. Everything seemed fine until I went to shut down and reboot into
Windows. I didn't attempt an installation or change any bios settings.

It now won't boot into Windows and hangs showing the Windows logo and a
progress bar that moves for about 30 seconds before hanging. There is no HD
activity.

It *will* boot into safe mode but neither "Last known working config" or
system restore has fixed it. It still keeps hanging at the same point.

Ubuntu forumites are adamant that nothing is written to the HD and that it's
probably coincidence but that doesn't help me get my PC booted.

Will it have to be a repair installation?

It sounds like a repair install will be needed. If you can get into safemode
though you can try a system restore.

I must admit I would agree that the Ubuntu boot CD doesn't change anything
on the hard drive if you don't chose to "install", I've used it a number of
times.

What Warning and Error messages appear in the System log of Event
Viewer?

Please make sure you are looking at a failed boot to normal mode before
posting selected reports.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

In addition to the reply posts - Safe Mode oot - no "Normal" boot indicates
a driver problem - also consider using msconfig for diagnostic purposes.
