when i boot my windows xp sp2 pc it intermittently hangs up on the windows xp
logo screen..and i have to reset and select the option.."last known good
config" to successfully finish the boot up..also selecting Safe Mode will
also allow the boot to finish..and then i can usually restart and boot
successfully until the next time i cold start..it may or may not then start
successfully..but most of the time it does.

it's likely that the hanging is due to hardware. You could try to disconnect
everything from the back of the pc except monitor, mouse and keyboard then
boot to safe mode. while in safe mode go to start > run > msconfig > startup
tab > disable all , then ensure you have enough swap file allocated by
going to control panel > system > advance > ...... min=2 max=750
then try to reboot in normal mode......

problem appears to be the way my brother hl-1440 is communicating with the pc
via the parallel port..if i turn the printer off completely..not just let it
power itself off into a standby state...it appers to complete the boot up
normally every time..so i will research the problem with brother..thanks for
your response. Rick
