XP backup

I was able to add the backup utility for Home XP but when I backup a
file I cannot open it. It says that it needs to know what program
created the file and the two options are to go to the net or to a list
of installed programs. Since none of these programs created the file
and the net is no help, I am at a loss to know what to do. They are
..bkf files. What am I missing?

"Browse" to the executable for Microsoft Backup - ntbackup.exe. That's
the program that created the file.

Thanks for the lead, but I have browsed for this program without
success. Can you lead me a little further into it? Thanks.

To find ntbackup.exe use Search. (I forget its default
location...perhaps it's C:\Windows\System32.)

Now you can "Browse" to ntbackup.exe, and once you find it, click once
on the icon to select it, then click Open. You'll be brought back to the
Open With dialog box where you'll now see Microsoft Backup in the list
and selected. Put a checkmark in 'Always use the selected program to
open this type of file' and click on OK.

Microsoft Backup is now associated with the .bkf extension. Now, IIRC,
when you double-click on a *.bkf file, Microsoft Backup will open.
