hello;

I went to shut down my PC. I get the message that I have update ready to
install. So ok, I shut down system ok.

reboot. then later I went to shut down PC again few hours later, and saw
same message. so, OK, I click on shutdown.

Now it happened again, I went to shut down my pc and I see that updates are
ready to install.

what is going on? looking at my update history in IE/windows update, I see
this:

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB923980) Saturday,
November 18, 2006 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB923980) Saturday,
November 18, 2006 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB923980) Saturday,
November 18, 2006 Microsoft Update

But this should be already installed? how many times will the same security
update want to install?

any idea what can cause this? virus may be? I have auto update on. this is
XP SP2 ofcourse.

thanks,
Nasser

Try changing the Automatic Updates behavior so they don't bother you anymore.
To do this:

1. Right-click on My Computer - choose Properties
2. Click Automatic Updates tab.
3. Change the behavior from "Automatic (Recommended)" to like "Dowload
Updates for me, but let me choose when to install them" or as you required.

Let us know, if this information may useful to you.

Thanks. I did that.

Funny thing, I just booted the PC, and right away I went to shut it down,
and the message saying update are ready to install is again there. Even
though I did shut down my PC few minutes ago.

All what I can think of is that it is not installing the update for some
reason when I shut down the PC. I also go to windows Update and click
install and it tells me it is installed ok, then I shut down the PC and
reboot, and go to shut it again, and the message telling me updates are
ready to install is there.

I think MS needs to fix its update system.

1. Goto "Automatic Updates" tab and here click on "Install Updates from
the
Windows Update Web-site" link.

See if this one can help you. Meanwhile, you can also check:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555615
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/whatsnewforwu.mspx

for further support. Let us know, if any of above helps you.

I did all of the above. I shut down the PC, and I see it installing update.
But when I boot again, right away, I tell to shut down, and I see this
screen again, here it is

http://12000.org/tmp/101806/strange.PNG

I just went to windows update again, and after it scans my PC it tells me I
still have to install the same security patch again! here is a screen shot:

http://12000.org/tmp/101806/winupdate.PNG

The thing is, I now unselect IE 7, becuase I do NOT want to install IE 7
(cause it causes a problem with my HP scanner software).
Then I say install. And we start all over again. It install, I boot and it
still tells me I need to install this patch.

Here is a screen shot of the history:

http://12000.org/tmp/101806/status.PNG

you can see yourself how many times it installed the same thing.

Any idea what is going on??

thanks,
Nasser

I had the same problem this morning after leaving the computer on all night.
I cleared the problem by:
1 - go to control panel
2 - open up system
3 - click automatic updates tab
4 - change settings to "notify me but don't update" and apply it
I did this then re-started the computer. The system then told me I had
updates to install. I installed the 3 updates and bingo I can switch off the
computer with no problems.
Hope this helps

I had the same problem too and like you, Cyrus, it didn't fix it. However, I
discovered that there was also a problem with my firewall (even though I had
stopped running it) and overcame it by preventing the firewall from running
automatically on startup. I have no idea why this worked, but everything
seems to be fine now and the updates are installed.

I had this problem.

First I turned off the "install" option of automatic updates.
Then I went to the microsoft automatic update site :-
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us

and let it check what updates were required, and then allowed it to install
them.

during the installation my anti-spyware software asked if I wanted to allow
various updates to the registry, which I believe must have been why
installation
"hung" on closedown. I Ok'd those, and everything went hunky-dory.

So, I think one thing is to always have the installation of updates under
human
control.

I know some of this repeats what's said elsewhere in this thread, but it might
help somebody.

cheers Jim
