Windows Update

For the past few days, when shutting down the PC (XP Prof SP3), the "Click
Turn Off to install important updates ..." message appears every time.
Since this was about the time the new Conficker threat appeared, I took no
notice. But my patience began to wear thin after a couple of days.
So I went to Help & Support, and manual update. It went through its
motions - then it said that KB905474 update was not installed.
Dunno why it didn't install. Don't care why it didn't install.

I just want to get rid of the repeated "Click Turn Off to install important
updates ..." when I shut down.

I went to Windows Update - after the manual update I still got the message
that Update KB905474 was not installed.

How can I either (a) install the bloody thing, or (b) stop Windows Update
trying to install the evidently uninstallable crap that nobody wants anyway
?????

Use Internet Explorer (you have to in order to run Windows Update) to
run Tools, Windows Update and let it figure out all the stuff it
thinks you need. From the Microsoft page, you can view your update
history from the link on the left of the page. See what failed, why
and if you want to try to fix it. When you find the crap ones, please
let me know.

You can choose Custom to see what it thinks. You should probably do
at least the service packs, high priority or critical ones and will
have to research and decide about the others, or just do them all if
that makes you feel good. They are probably okay - since they come
from Microsoft,they must be!

Depending on how far behind you are, size and connection speed, it
could take some time. You can watch them all download install. You
will get a summary. If there is a problem, it will tell you why. You
can also have it check your update history. When it is done, I would
reboot and do it again until it find nothing to do. You may be
prompted to reboot anyway. Sooner or later, you will be up to date.

Fix your Windows so it downloads updates automatically in the
background while you are online from Start, Settings, Control Panel,
Security Center. Turn on Automatic Updates if it is not. Tun on the
Windows firewall and Virus Protection if you are so motivated. It is
generally considered good stuff. You want three green lights on that
screen.

The Update page will tell you your current settings on the right
side. It would be good to read what those little things have to say
about your configuration and make sure it is not complaining.

With Automatic Updates turned on, sometime later, when it has enough
downloaded for something to install, you will see a little yellow
shield icon to the left of your clock in the taskbar and maybe a pop
up message that you can click and then see the updates, install the
updates right now, wait till later, tell it to go away, etc.

Once you get caught up manually, the automatic ones should keep you up
to date and if you don't install them manually by clicking the
announcing shield, they will want to install when you shutdown. That
could take a while if there are a lot. If you shutdown anyway, it
will try to install them again next time, so just let it finish once
in a while if you don't do them manually beforehand.

They will get faster and less frequent when they find less or nothing
to.

Do all of the following, in order:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB905474 and "hide" it ("Don't show me this
update again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

I got the same thing three days ago (21st April tried and failed seven times
to install it) and the particular update was listed as being 0KB in the
Windows Update website when I tried to download it manually. I just gave up
on it after a while and told WU to ignore it in future. I haven't heard any
more about it since (Yes my copy of WinXP is licensed, to my workplace, as I
am using their machine).
