XP auto-update after installing SP2

After installing SP2 the auto-update:downloading updates icon is permanently
in the system tray. Clicking (2left, 1right) produce no response. Hovering
pointer displays tag "Downloading updates: 0%". Should this be here? Do I
need it there? Can I get rid of it?

You can change the Auto Update from the Security Centre which can be accessed
via the Control Panel. Selecting the option to be "Notify of Updates but
don't automatically download or install" worked for me.
