I need help! I cannot open Word. I updated to XP from ME and now Word won't
open. THe only message I get is.."Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered
a problem and needs to close. Sorry for any inconvenience." Help!

You will waste a lot of time trying to figure it out, Don't bother! Just re
install it,or repair the install. Very quick and easy

What version of Word are you using?

That worked but do I need to do that everytime? Also, I still cannot open
documents. Thanks

I figured out how to repair it, but I still get thte same message. I've
reinstalled and repaired, without any luck.

Winword /a starts word with factory settings. This means it's caused by corruypted settings that it's saved. Most likely it's normal.dot.

Mine is at
C:\Documents and Settings\David Candy\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot

but yours may be elsewhere. Rename it and word will make a new one next time you start it. If you still crash after renaming post back as there are other settings that can become corrupted - but normal.dot is the culprit 99% of the time.

THank you so much!! I deleted all the 'normal.dot ' files and now all is
well! I thank you so much!

If you performed an in-place upgrade from an earlier edition of
Windows, and Word was already installed, you'll likely have to repair or
reinstall it, so it can add the necessary additional functions needed
for use on a multi-user OS. It may be sufficient to simply insert the
respective installation CD and select the "Detect and Repair" option.

When typing in Microsoft word 2003 if you type a common phrase like a name a
box will appear that says " Press enter to Insert". The problem is that what
is inserted is not capitalized and I don't know how to change what is
inserted so that it is correct.

Open Word, then go the menu item TOOLS, choose AUTO CORRECT, then the AUTO TEXT tab.
Find the entry that is incorrect and change it.
