Word 2000 SR-1 keeps crashing

I have WorksSuite 2001 installed on my laptop with Word 2000 SR-1 for about 2
years with no problems. Then all of a sudden Word and all of my Word
Documents won't load/run and crashes. Then I get this message:

Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience.

Error Signature= AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.8943 ModName:
winword.exe ModVer: 9.0.0.8943 offset: 003f2868

Error Report= C:\DOCUME~1\name\LOCALS~1\temp\5517_appcompat.txt

Ok, This message sends me to Microsoft's Download page and I download all
the updates and security updates, I installed them and still Word starts,
then it crashes before it loads and the above message comes up.

I even un-installed/re-installed Word (4 times). Same result. I also reset
my computer to a previous check-point and that didn't help. I ran Word
through my virus and spyware programs and it came back clean. And still Word
keeps crashing.

So, What is happening? Going on? and how can I fix this?

Thanks in advance for all of your help,

vogueboy

a) delete everything in that temp folder. it is all expenidiable.
b) see if there are renegade startups. go to start, run and type-in
msconfig , enter then go to startup tab and disable all, reboot.

Thanks databaseben,

I did that and the samething happened... unfortunately.

So, I called Customer Support and gave them the details, They said my
version is obsolete and that I needed a new version. Also they said that an
obsolete program can't repair itself, (even if I downloaded the upgrades and
hotfixes)

Everything else works fine on my laptop except Word. So why can't it repair
itself?(They never gave me an adequate explanation as to why).

Considering that Word was working perfectly just a few days ago.
