XP and scanning

To save time when scanning photos, I want to be able to place several
photos on a scanner and have them cropped separately, automatically, so that
they can be saved individually. I have seen this done in WinXP on another
PC. However, I had problems finding a driver to get my scanner working
and when I finally did get it working, this facility does not appear to
exist, presumably because I cannot initiate the package by pressing a button
on the scanner.

Does anyone know what the program is in WinXP that does this?
Does anyone know of an alternative freeware package that will do this.

On my scanner this feature was part of the bundled
software controlling the scanner. I'm unaware of any XP
feature that allows this.
