XP and printers

After upgrading from 98SE to XP Home, no printers were showing. I tried to print and message said no printers available. I go to reinstall the printer and message says printer already exists. So I uninstall the printer and re-install. Install goes without any error messages. Still, printer does not show up and system tells me there is no printer when I try to print

Is the printer cable hooked into the computers USB or parallel port

Check the cable!

UNINSTALL first.... ALL printers should be DISCONNECTED from a PC when
performing an upgrade. Now you have corrupted printer drivers on your PC.

In addition it sounds as if your Print Spooler is not running, from the
Command Prompt, type

net start spooler

(and hit enter)
