Normally, and assuming a retail license (many OEM licenses are not
transferable to a new motherboard), unless your motherboard is
virtually identical (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS
version, etc.) to the one on which the other WinXP installation was
originally performed, you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place
upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will also require re-activation. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Almost certainly there's something in the 20-digit product code
generated for each installation (to be found at Control Panel > System)
that will tell those able to interpret.

Greetings --

Did you buy WinXP from a retail store and install it yourself, or
was it pre-installed on a PC you purchased from an OEM (Original
Equipment Manufacturer)?

Long story really...but XP Home was preinstalled by chap who built and
supplied pc. I also had the CD but the Product Key reference wasn't
supplied. Supplier refused to send me another XP Home CD free.... so had no
option but to purchase one from him (in case I needed to reinstall at any
time).
Sure enough the Home XP did go belly up..so that's when I used the spare
copy...which turned out to be XP Pro (that supplier had sent by
mistake...the only good thing in the sorry saga! )
And it shows in Start/Control Panel/System as an OEM XP Pro.
