XP and Outlook 2000

Greetings:

New box with XP Pro. I installed Office 2000.

When I launch Outlook, everything works fine for about three minutes.
Then, I get one of those "Sorry for the inconvenience. Have to shut
down Outlook 2000."

It's that error message that gives me the option to send the error to
MS. When I send the error to MS, it tells me that a fix is available
for download. I follow the instructions and go to the Office Updates
site. It scans my box and tells me that my Office installation is up
to date and no updates are available.

Whether or not I choose to send the error to MS or not, it closes
Outlook. I reopen and within three minutes the entire process starts
again.

Things I've Tried:

1. I ran the "Repair Office" application off the Office CD. No change.

2. I uninstalled all of Office. Cleaned out all residual files and
cleaned the registry. Defraged machine. Re-installed office. Same
problem.

???????????

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Long shot... try running ScanPST.EXE on your PST file

Vince,

Thanks for the reply and the mini education: I wasn't familiar with
Scanpst.

It said it found no errors, however. Still having the same issue. Oh,
well. It was a long shot.

Thanks,

James

Can you get any more details on the error?

Not really, Vince.

After Outlook has been open about three minutes, a window opens that
says:

"Outllook has encountered a problem and must close. Sorry for the
inconvenience"

At the bottom of the window, I have to option to "Send" or "Don't
Send" the issue to MS.

When I click on "Send", another window opens that shows the progress
of my send, then another window opens to say "There is a fix." It
directs me to the MS Office Update site, where I click on scan for
updates. It scans for about thirty seconds and then tells me I don't
need any updates.

Whether you click Send or Don't Send, Outlook closes.

However, during the three minutes or so that it's open, before the
error message appears, you can send and receive mail, check your
calendar, tasks etc. It works just fine.

But I can only use it three minutes at a time.

Curiously, the machine the issue is on was purchased at the same time
as another machine. The two are identical Dell's. Both have the same
Office installed from the same CD.

The other machine does not have this problem.

That about covers the whole experience.

Thanks for your help with this.

Can you get any more details on the error?

Vince,

Finally found the issue!!!

On the XP box in question, I set up a Shared Calendar (NetFolder) with
the user of this machine as the administrator of the Calendar.
Apparently, XP has a big problem with that. That's why the other,
identical, XP machine did not have the same problem: that user was not
the Administrator.

So, I changed the Administrator to one of the users on a W2K box.
Problem gone!

Just wanted to close the loop with you. Thanks very much for your
comments and help.
