XP and Dial Up Connections

Ajr-

Since I changed from Windows 2000 to XP, I keep being
bumped off line, having to redial, and often lose work
I've begun on-line. I connect to internet by telephone.

Suggestions for alleviating this problem of losing
connections and losing work?
 
In the modem properties there is an option where it gets disconnected if idle for a certain number of seconds. disable that

and another one is some applications give u the option of hanging up once the task is complete. for eg. outlook express and emails. check that

Also if you have call waiting please disable it.
