XP Activation Failing!

No-Spin

Everything went well when I first installed and activated
this XP (pro) just over a year ago. But suddently I've
begun receiving Activation warnings:
Absolutely no hardware has been changed on my WinXP (pro)
PC since I installed XP. Still tonight I receive a
message giving me 3 days to re-activate my XP. Could it
be that the closest one and only thing to changing
hardware that I've done -dropping and reestablishing a
printer connection earlier today- has triggered this re-
activation?!
Worse, when I click on the product activation key in lower
menu bar, it just disappears! And, when I try
Run, "oobe/msoobe /a", I get nothing! -No screens or
anything to look at. Yet when I reboot, I still get the
same activation warning -and now it says only two days!
I also tried XP's Help screens to get the activation phone
number, but the Help screen's URL wouldn't open the screen
to provide any info. I had to find and go into
a ..\oobe\phone.inf file to acquire a USA phone number
but, when I called, a message system simply asks for
information from an open (msoobe) screen... But msoobe
doesn't open any screens (apparently does nothing)!
This "sucks"!!! (Along with a whole host of other MS-bs
over a few years) But this activation stuff, and now
apparently failing, really makes other operating systems
look more attractive all the time! So, I've already begun
looking into RedHat's stuff...

No question that activation sucks. However, in order to get your
system running normally, you may have to call the activation telephone
number which should be displayed in the wizard.

Click on the Start Button, and then click on Run, and type:

regsvr32 licdll.dll

Hit Enter key, then type:

regsvr32 regwizc.dll

Hit Enter again, then type:

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

Hit Enter yet again.

Hopefully that should get the Activation Wizard running for you.

Activation is only a big pain in the ass for the End User, with
absolutely no benefits whatsoever. The best way to show MS the error of
their ways, is to stop giving them positive reinforcement for them
dissing their customers with PA [& DRM.] In other words, stop buying
any MS products until they learn to respect their customers!

So, then your middle name must be Jesus. Ha-le-luia!!
It appears to have activated now...
Thank you and eh, of course, your father too. :)
Alas, I must now confess: I've not invested in MS product
myself beyond XP. (MS products -Office and the like- are
the only stuff I'll "accept for free"... because of MS's
nasty ways.) Please don't hold this against me when I die.
Anyway, Linix here I come!

Something has damaged the records of activation on the hard disk - they
would be a tempting target for a virus. As you have the three days
grace allowed by SP1, get on the net straight away and run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
to activate on the internet again . It will take about 20 seconds
