XP & 98 network

C

confused

I've setup a home network with an XP and a W98 computer
and a cable modem connected to a hub. I've run the setup
wizard but I only have access to the internet on the W98
and the computers can't see each other.

I've disabled Norton and ZoneAlarm and re-run the setup
wizard...still no good. I've read lots of the info
available, to no avail.

Any Help????

If you have standard cable internet service, one computer is entitled to
service, and is getting a DHCP address assigned by the cable service. That is
the computer that connects to the internet.

Since you are only entitled to one address, the other computer gets no address.
Or it may be self assigning an APIPA address (169.254.x.x).

If you want to connect two computers, with internet and file sharing on both,
you need to replace the hub with a router.

To avoid becoming even more "confused", please be aware that you won't
be able to follow Carey's suggestion of "Tip #1 on all PCs". That tip
doesn't apply to Windows XP, because (with a single exception) the
settings that it describes don't exist in Windows XP.

Please see Chuck's reply for good advice: replacing the hub with a
home broadband router to give Internet access and file sharing to both
computers. The setup wizard calls a router a "residential gateway".

Be sure that there isn't more than one firewall on either computer.
Disable XP's built-in firewall if Norton or ZoneAlarm is running.
