Problem with W98 / WinXP home network

J

John Gilchrist

I have WinXP Pro and W98 workstation on home network with Linksys wireless
router.

I ran XP Network setup disk on W98 workstation

Both computers can access internet thru router
XP computer can "see" w98 computer and can copy files to/from W98 computer

W98 computer cannot "see" Wxp computer. In fact, W98 Windows explorer
"freezes" as soon as I click on Network Neighborhood.

IP addresses appear to be set as follows:
router = 192.168.1.1
XP computer = 192.168.1.100
W98 computer = 192.168.1.101

..100 can ping both .1 and .101 plus itself
..101 can ping .1 and itself, but not .100

Thanks,

John,

What SP level on the XP computer? If SP2, is Windows Firewall involved? If so,
is the File and Printer Sharing exception enabled?

Check for a browser conflict between the WinXP computer and the Win98 computer.
I"m not talking about Internet Explorer here. The browser is the program that
allows any computer to see any other computer on the LAN. The browsers for
WinXP (WinNT/2K/XP) and Win98 (Win95/98/ME) don't work well together on the same
LAN.

Make sure the browser service is running on the WinXP computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Disable the
browser on the Win98 computer:
http://cms.simons-rock.edu/faq_by_subtopic/node138.html
http://www.compudentsystems.com/documentation/win98.html

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power both computers off to
reset the browser settings on each. Once both computers have been powered off,
power them back on.

The browser requires anonymous access, so look at registry key
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value restrictanonymous.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

For browsing to work (for each computer to be listed by a browser), each
computer must have a restrictanonymous value of "0".

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember Win2K is NT V5.0, and WinXP
is NT V5.1.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

Once you get browsing working between both computers, we'll look at file
sharing. That's another story though.
