Help! - New Home Network

K

Karl Winters

Im setting up a new home network with two computers. Ive got internet, but they
dont see each other.

Im connected by cable to modem to Linksys WIFI router to main computer (XP Pro).
The second computer is a Win98 laptop with Linksys WiFi card. I assigned shared
folders on each, ran the 'new network' wizard, on both machines, and made what I
thought was the appropriate tweaks to make XP 'see' W98. Ive got Internet on
both, but they dont see each other.

When I try to see the shareddoc folder belonging to the W98 from the XP, I get a
message saying I dont have permission. When I try to go the other way, the W98
crashes.

I feel like there's something small I still need to do. Can someone help?

Karl,

Check for a browser conflict between the WinXP computer and the Win98 computer.
I"m not talking about Internet Explorer here. The browser is the program that
allows any computer to see any other computer on the LAN. The browsers for
WinXP (WinNT/2K/XP) and Win98 (Win95/98/ME) don't work well together on the same
LAN.

Make sure the browser service is running on the WinXP computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Disable the
browser on the Win98 computer:

http://www.compudentsystems.com/documentation/win98.html

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset
the browser settings on each. Once ALL computers have been powered off, power
them back on.

On the XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS properly set on each computer.

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

Setup User-level on Windows 98.

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, and on the Windows 98 computer, setup and use a
common non-Guest account, with a identical, non-blank password.

More about file sharing, between all different versions of Windows:
