I'm new to this forum, but have read a few archives on this
topic. I'm running XP with svc. pk. 1 and follow-on
updates, but not svc. pk. 2. I just reformatted the hard
disk and have a fresh copy of Home Ed. I am a die-hard
Netscape (v. 7.2) user. When I download a pdf and Acrobat
Reader automatically opens, the cpu goes to 100%. Checking
performance, only Reader and task manager are active. I had
the same problem with a different program before starting
over vanilla. Does anyone have a remedy? I've also read
that "overclocking" can be a factor. This is really
frustrating and I am aware others on various platforms are
experiencing the same problem with XP. Is it inherent or
genetic? Thanks so much.

in XP, hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up the task manager.
Click on processes. This will tell you exactly what
process is using 100% CPU. I am guessing that it is
acrobat causing the problem (I have seen acrobat do this
many times before). make sure you have the latest patches
for acrobat installed. If that doesnt work, then
uninstall/reinstall acrobat.
