someone sent me an xls file i can open it but not use the spreadsheet,i run xp and dont have excel,how can i do this w/out buying excel?

If you haven't got Excel installed you will only be able to view the file.
You won't be able to edit it.

Open Office's support for Excel files is flaky at best.

With the viewer, you can not create or modify, but you can view Excel
files.

Corel Quattro Pro will open and edit Excel files, it is very
compatible.
