Wrong IP Address, Can't be released and renewed

Last night I stopped being able to access my network from my notebook using
either a wired or wireless connection. Another notebook has the same
problem. All other computers are working fine. The IP Address says
169.254.180.169, but should say 192.168.1.10x. I have tried to use the
"repair" function, ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew,
Winsockxpfix, rebooting multiple times, etc. Ipconfig /release initially
looks like it worked, but ipconfig /renew gives me an error: "An error
occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection: unable to contact
your DHCP server. Request has timed out. An error occured while renewing
interface Wireless Netwrok Connection: unable to contact your DHCP server.
Request has timed out."

Any ideas? Much thanks.

One notebook is 3 weeks old, the other is 10 months old. One is a Toshiba,
one is an ACER.

why not try a static ip address and if that resolves the issue then maybe the
dhcp can be addressed...

I tried that a few hours ago. It didn't work. Instead of "Obatin an IP
address automatically" I selected "Use the following IP address" and Use the
following DNS Server Addresses" I couldn't connect. Did you have something
else in mind?
This is all a foreign language to me.
Thanks

Do you have a person responsible for administering the dhcp server? If so
they are the likely one for you to address. Your DHCP lease may have expired
and is no set up correctly to renew addresses.

Home. 3 notebooks, 1 wireless desktop, 2 wired desktops and the ability to
wire any of the notebooks when needed.

No administrator. Earlier I checked the icpconfig /all on the primary
desktop. All was okay with it. Lease appears to be assigned every 24 hours
and expires at 6 PM tonight on that computer.

I think some program or internet site hijacked my IP setting. I have had
this happen before but the steps I have already taken fixed it in the past.
I know that can cause the IP address to get set to 169.254.x.x. Does anyone
have any new fangled ideas to un-hijack the settings. The old ones aren't
working.

DHCP doesn't seem to be the appropiate solution for yourr scale of set-up. I
would suggest that you disable ths dhcp and use static addressing. I assume
that the pc which is resposible for leassing the dhcp addresses can be set to
a static ip. from there all you need to do is make sure that all of the
clients use the same ip range. ie server 192.1.100.xx1 clients 192.168.100.x.

This is all based on my set-up and experience, it's difficult to ascertain
yours and this delayed conversation doesn'y help the situation. I will keep
an eye out for further posts but as from now will be unavailable for the next
48 hrs.

Your computer is using an APIPA address.

This means that for some reason your computer is not communicating with your
DHCP server which is probably your router. Have you tried resetting your
router? Unplug it, wait a minute then plug it back in. You mentioned in
another post you tried a static IP. Could you tell us the internal IP of
your router and the static settings you tried?

Kerry,

Thank you.
Rebooting the router twice worked. The simplist things are often the ones
you forget. Hopefully I will never forget to try that step again.
