Cannot aquire a NetWork Address either Wireless or Connected

R

ricpedtech

My computer was working fine and then later in the day I tried to connect to
the Internet I was unable to. I looked at my IP config and all of the IP
addresses are 0.0.0.0. (IP Address/Subnet Mask and Default Gateway - has no
reading).

When I try to use ipconfig /renew I get: "An error occured while renewing
interface Local Area Connection : The RPC server is unavailable."

I have tried my laptop at home and at work and the other computers on the
networks are working fine.

I see in the Task bar the wireless and the local area conntections are
trying to aquire a network address but with no luck.

I have a Compaq Presario 2700 Laptop with XP Pro installed.

Ricpedtech,

What happens if you disable the firewall & then do this:

START | RUN | Type 'cmd (without quotes) & press ENTER

type:

ipconfig /renew

then type:

ipconfig /all

Do you have an IP address now? If so then you need to allow your network cards access via
the firewall

The firewall is off - In fact, when I try to turn it on I get: "Windows
Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not
running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) service?"

When I hit yes I get: "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) service.

When I type ipconfig /all I get:
DHCP Enabled - Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled - Yes
IP Address - 0.0.0.0.
Subnet Mask -0.0.0.0.
Default Gateway -
DHCP Server - 192.168.1.1.
DNS Servers - 74.134.1.132
74.134.1.333

That means the computer not getting an IP from the Wireless Router, but have
a Good Signal!.

Try to Open a run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [Ok]
netsh winsock reset click [Ok]
Reboot the machine, does it help?.

Do you have a switch for the wireless on this machine, if you do try to
switch it OFF then ON gain? and Start the Laptop.

If you still cannot get an IP, you may need to tell us which Utility you
elected/select to manage your wireless connection. is it the Windows Wireless
Xero Config or the laptop wireless manufacturer Utility?.
In either, you will need to turn one OFF and leave the other ON to manage
and assign the Laptop an IP address from the Wireless Access point available
to you.

Open the network connection and locate your wireless Connection and right
click on it and select properties.

On the wireless properties make sure the Machine getting an Auto IP address
if you assigned it Auto IP address and DNS.

Still nothing.

FYI - using a Cat 5 connection and/or with wireless the problem still exists.

I use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.

The Machine is getting Auto IP and DNS adresses.

Open Network Connections, rt-click (wired) Local Area Connection.
On General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP); click Properties button.
On the General tab, is "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" set? or is it
set to
"Use the following IP Address" and 0.0.0.0, etc.? Set Auto.

can you ping anything?
did you try to ping the loopback address? (172.0.0.1)
can you ping the dhcp server?

can you assign yourself an address in the range at home and connect?
(try 192.168.1.5/255.255.255.0)

S

Script

1)Disable wireless Local Area Connection.
2)Delete wired Local Area Connection.
3)Go to Internet Options> Connections tab>LAN button. Turn OFF Auto detect
settings, if it's on. {OK}
4)Click "Setup" button, at top if connections tab.
5)Choose connection type as if computer was new.
Connects:Yes/No?

Control Panel > Administrative Tools >Services
Are "Network Connections", "Remote Procedure Call(RPC)", and "Windows
Management Instrumentation" services ALL turned on?
ICS depends on these being on.

When I try to do a loop back ping it drops all of the packets and all other
attempts to connect wireless and wired have failed (I know my Internet is up
and running - the problem lies with the laptop.).

Any other ideas would be greatly appriciated.

Okay if you can't even ping the loopback address *i think* this
usually indicates something gone wrong with the tcp/ip protocol stack
on your machine. The fact that both the wired and wireless nics aren't
connecting *could* mean they are using the same screwed up protocol
stack. If i were in your shoes, i would start by removing the tcp/ip
protocol from both interfaces. This should require a restart in both
instances. next, i would disable the wireless nic in device manager,
then reinstall (I'm hoping a disc is asked for at this point, to get a
fresh copy off of a disc) the protocol on the wired nic, (another
restart) then try the loopback address again WITHOUT connecting the
cable. If the ping is succesfull, THEN connect the cable (make sure of
the obtain ip automatically stuff) and see if you get an IP address.
All being good up to this point, try connecting to web page or two. If
succesfull, re-enable the wrieless adapter, reinstall tcp/ip, surf,
surf, surf,,,good luck.
These are the steps i would take if i were you.....

S

Script

Try "Googling" - can't ping 127.0.0.1

Bad NIC? Norton? XP Firewall? ICMP blocked? Hosts file compromised? etc.
