Wrong association for truetype (.ttf) files

Character

If a webpage has a link to a .ttf file, IE6 does the following:

A left-click on the link opens a media player portin of the IE6 window
and attempts to play the .ttf file; needless to say, it can't do it very
well :)

A right-click opens the normal right-click menu; selecting "save target
as" yields a save window, with a file type of "Windows Media Audio/Video
Shortcut" and it changes the file extension to be saved from .ttf to
..wvx.

My file associations outside of OE are fine. .ttf is associated with
FontView and shows up in Windows Explorer as a truetype file.

This occurs with links to .ttf files from a large number of different
websites. It used to work OK with IE5.x
(Both under Windows 98SE)

Two questions:
1) How do I change this behavior to something more rational?
2) Why does this happen in the first place?

If a .ttf works OK in Explorer, (i.e. opens with FontView) then it is
not an association problem so I suspect an invalid plugiin.

Try this standard response for .exe files and use .ttf instead of .exe
and see how you go:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

Thank you for your response.

There were two extension listed there, .css and .spop
..css refers to comet cursor, a known spyware program - (NOT found by
Ad-Aware, by the way!)
I removed it and all related references and files, and guess what!?
The problem is resolved!

Thank you again.

Thank you for your reply.
I checked the indicated registry entries, and found only .spop and .css
(comet cursor, a known spyware program).

I deleted the .css entry and all related entries and files, and thought
for a moment that this had cured the problem, since it had gone away.
But the temporary fix was really only effective on the page I was on,
and was due to my having changed the names from a .wvx extension and
changing the type to "all files" in order to download a file. After I
closed IE and restarted it, the problem resurfaced.

Any additional ideas?

No further ideas, assuming you have checked to see if the keys
returned.
