Worthless Desktop Icons

Can anyone give me some advice on how to permanently
remove useless icons from my desktop? My new HP came
stuffed with promotional links/icons which clutter things
up. I removed about half of them by using the "remove
software" utility in the control panel by the rest are
not listed. The HP support center suggested using
Desktop Cleanup Manager, but all that does is create a
new worthless desktop icon called " Unused Desktop Icons".

Tried clicking on them (selecting them) and pressing the DEL key?

It doesn't get rid of the program, but it gets rid of the icon - which is
what you asked.
