Desktop icons with with file missing

Unable to delete these icons. When I try, it comes back with the message
that the file can not be found. Somehow the file that was associated was
deleted without the icon being deleted. Now I am unable to get rid of them.
The desktop cleanup wizard does not see these icons. I have tried everything
I know to remove these icons to no avail. They appear faded, not like the
other icons on the desktop.

Hi,

Click start/run, type CMD and click ok. From the prompt, run chkdsk c: /r
and hit <enter>. You will not be able to dismount the drive for this
extensive test, instead follow the prompts for it to be scheduled to run
when the system reboots. Then reboot.

Nice try Rick, but no dice. The "ghost" icons are still on the desktop and
when I try to delete them, The error message states, "Cannot delete file:
Cannot read from source file or disk."

Hi Don,

I suspected as much, the Bin interferes with the proper removal of files.
Removing this software will resolve it.

Hello Rick,
Just an aside relating to Norton, I have none of its programmes, mostly
because of the many negative reports I hear, re. unwanted side effects.
But given all these negative reports, wouldn't you think the people at
Norton would make some effort to fix it? Or is it too late? have they
created a monster that is out of control?
I used to be quite happy with Norton utilities in the DOS days.
Cheers

I assume that like almost all companies, the people at Symantec (not Norton,
which no longer exists as a compny) are driven by sales figures. If the
product sells (and it does) they are happy.

Yes, there are many negative reports (including from me) in places like this
newsgroup, but we are a tiny fraction of the marketplace.

Yes, many of us were. But those largely were the days when it was a Norton
product, not a Symantec one.
