Worrd 2007 - Changing Styles.

Philip J Smith

I want to insert a paragraph above a line which has the default Heading 1
style applied.

When I insert the row the new and all subsequent rows created bear the same
style.

I have tried changeing the style using the "normal" button on the home
ribbon, but it doesn't work!

I've tried inserting a new blank page before it, but that doesn;t work
either.

Either of these worked in word 2003 and earlier versions!

Could anyone tell me what am I missing please?

Yes. If I wanted to enter a new paragraph before an existing heading and
paragraph i'd simply put the cursor at the beginning of the heading and press
the return key. It seemed to work so I never bothered investating further -
if it ain't broke don't fix it.

After typing the note I clicked on the little arrow at the botton of the
styles box on the home ribbon. This allowed me to select clear all styles
and continue working.

If there is an alternative which is faster and more reliable route then I'd
use that, but I've no idea what it might be - I know that there are online
training sessions but plowing through those to get the relevant session does
not seem to be the best use of my time.

Many thanks for your time

Since clearing the formatting works, perhaps there is direct formatting
applied to text? In particular, character styles are always applied "on top"
of the underlying paragraph style, and the character style name would
display on the Home tab (or in the Styles pane).

To clear direct font formatting (including character styles) from the
selection, press Ctrl+SpaceBar. And to clear direct paragraph formatting,
press Ctrl+Q.

Thanks for that.

However, neither seem to work.

I've tried highlighting the text and then using the commands.

No worries. I've found a work around.
