Change Log:

<Note: I am now listing 70 programs, which is just about right. Any fewer
and we miss out on some good programs. Any more and the quality drops off. I
may add 2 or 3 more categories if I should run across very special
programs.>

*Added PDF reader (FoxIt Reader)
*Promoted "Cobian Backup" rating from 7 to 8
*Removed "PowerDesk 5 Express", Added "PowerDesk 6 Standard"
*EasyCleaner knocked off HD Cleaner (bug)
*Promoted NIST client "D4" rating from 7 to 9 (error)
*Fixed non-working hyperlinks (getting used to NVU)
*Corrected "Digital Camera Assistant" notes only
*Changed a few "titles" or "hovertext" remarks, minor.

Still looking for replacements mainly for the 7 and 8 rated programs, and
still looking for 1 or 2 categories.

Enjoy, and have a happy New Year!

Nice site. :-)
You have some old links that are dead though. To FastStone and Henk De
Jongs site.

Bob, thanks for the site.
A comment on Foxit Reader- every time I run the executable, it steals the pdf file
association which in my machine is set for Acrobat Reader 3. I stopped using Foxit
as that is bad behavior on my hard drive.

I noticed that too, but consider it a GOOD thing. :)

All seriousness aside, I believe there is a setting in FoxIt "Help",,, "Set
to Default PDF Reader".

I never launch FoxIt. I click on PDF files in Explorer, or URL's. It
integrates nicely with my browser.

Happy New Year to all!

Comments on the rating system:

1) Stable
- shouldn't even be mentioned!
2) Nag
- I believe one nag screen at startup is acceptable
- believe me, programmers need to eat too
3) No install
- if it's only a single exe, usually there is no need for it
- if it is creating folder and some startup files, shouldn't that
be OK?
4) Ini file
- shouldn't this depend on the app?

I think the rating system is gearing for one type of application, i.e.
a single-function application.

Comments on the selections:

1) Notepad replacement
- I think Gridisoft Notepad Lite (http://notepad.gridinsoft.com/)
is a much
better editor

2) Anti spyware
- how about Ad-Aware Personal?

3) raphics viewer
- how about Irfan View?

3) Power Desk???

IIRC, I saw that setting, used it, but it STILL had the problem, so I deleted
every instance of it. I use Acrobat 3 converted to executable, works OK.

MS

You should have deleted Acrobat Reader. That program is a slug.

Nice list. Surely you can't think that CDex, while being an excellent
ripper, is superior to EAC ;-)

Comments on the rating system:

1) Stable
- shouldn't even be mentioned!

I see what you are saying. That stability is paramount and goes without
saying. However, I have flushed programs with very unique and excellent
features because they misbehaved or interfered with other apps.
2) Nag
- I believe one nag screen at startup is acceptable
- believe me, programmers need to eat too

Then they should released their programs as Shareware, not Freeware.

3) No install
- if it's only a single exe, usually there is no need for it

Creating a folder is OK. Letting me create my own is even better.

4) Ini file
- shouldn't this depend on the app?

Of course. Some programs do not need INI files because they don't have any
preferences to save. It's important for portable apps to save their
preferences in an INI or other local file. Anything beats saving to the
registry.
I think the rating system is gearing for one type of application, i.e.
a single-function application.

I prefer small, quick, single function apps. It's been my experience that
programs that have 1 general function are better than programs that try to
do too many things. One doesn't normally want their calculator playing
MP3's, or their MP3 player to have a built-in spreadsheet. There are gray
areas where multi-functions make sense, if the program is well executed.
Comments on the selections:

1) Notepad replacement
- I think Gridisoft Notepad Lite (http://notepad.gridinsoft.com/)
is a much better editor

There are many excellent NotePad replacements out there, and there is not
much difference among my top 10 favorites. When I apply all my rules
loosely, BDV and MetaPad come out on top, but not by much.

GNP Lite gets a couple of points off because of size (it's as large as a
"heavy-duty" text editor), uses an install, and has crippled features, among
other things. Those things are not to my taste, but that's not to say it
still can't be a very useful editor to others.
2) Anti spyware
- how about Ad-Aware Personal?

Excellent program!
3) raphics viewer
- how about Irfan View?

Very good program!
3) Power Desk???

Very good program. It's on my list.

Dud,

Thank you!

But surely you don't think I can find and evaluate every Freeware program in
the world! That's what you're for! :)

All seriousness aside, when I get caught up from all the holiday madness,
I'll give it a try.

Twas just funnin'. I was a long time CDex advocate and still like the
program. EAC is superior to anything available simply because it gets an
exact (hence the name ;-)) rip. EAC integrates easily with Lame(and any
other command line encoder - ie flac, ape.) with the prescribed
hydrogenaudio.org method
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=28124

You can waste hours there but your Mp3 files will benefit :-)

Using an example of calculator playing MP3 is absurd. Who in the right
mind would even think of something like that?

As MS is manily a GUI environment, "small, quick, single function apps"
are OK if the function is relatively complex, e.g. a text editor. Would
you like to use a GUI to do dir, one to do cacls, one to do rename,
etc?

I think the rating system is too narrow minded. It seems to me like a
sub-category of the whole freeware categories.
