Hi Bob,
May I respectfully add a few suggestions for your site?
I noticed that you have both CDBurnerXP Pro and CDex listed on your
site. I used to use CDex to rip songs until I found CDBurnerXP Pro---it
rips too. I don't need CDex anymore.
You have Evil Player rated as the MP3 Player. Evil Player is a good
quality program and I was very happy with it until I found "1by1.exe"
at
http://www.mpesch3.de/
Your site has 40tudeDialog listed as the News Reader. I have heard some
wonderful things about it but I admit that I haven't used it.
May I suggest "MesNews" from
http://www.zoo-logique.org/mesnews/chargement-gb.php
MesNews does newsgroups and it has Yenc built in.
As for a NIST Client (Clock Adjustment), rather than Automachron, have
you seen Dimension 4 from
http://www.thinkman.com/dimension4/ It can
be set to load into the system tray at startup, adjust the time when
you go online, and then unload itself and remove its icon from your
tray. After it does its job, it turns itself off.
BVD Notepad is a very good product. Have you had a chance to evaluate
Notepad++ from
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm
Thank you amonom...anoaomamo... uh, un-named guy.
I *really do* appreciate your suggestions!
Here we go!
CDEX: You are generally correct that CDBurner XP Pro makes CDEX redundant.
However, CDEX has other services that CDBXPP do not have. For example, I use
CDEX to run through my MP3's occasionally to search out higher bitrate MP3's
and compress them to 128 bit, which is about as good as my hearing
resolution. I'll leave CDEX on my list for now!
1by1: Yes, it's a drop dead great program. (as is Billy) IIRC, it's coded in
MASM, and very compact, which I like. I don't see a dimes worth of
difference in Evil, Billy, and 1by1. All have their own strengths and
weaknesses. My reasoning for choosing Evil is mainly because it plays MOD,
IT, and S3M, of which I still have a collection. I like to use Windows
Explorer and click on the songs I want to hear. 1by1 uses its own little
explorer to browse to the MP3's, which is redundant. Nevertheless, I adore
1by1, and always keep in my "1-File Wonder" collection. It's almost "flip a
coin" betwixt Evil, Billy, and 1by1.
MesVery interesting program! Frankly, I have never heard of it. That's
one reason I like this news group so much. I like the GUI and the
compactness and speed of the program. However, it's SO DIFFERENT from the
news readers I use that it will take me a wile to get my arms around it. For
example, I downloaded the ACF headers just fine, but MesNews started
downloading ALL BODIES for a jillion old headers without my having requested
it! My head is still spinning! It's not that I don't like MesNews, it's
just that it's so different that the learning curve is steep for me.
D4: You have a winner! The only reason I did not use it instead of Achron
was the log. (history). Apparently, D$ added the history feature or I
overlooked it. D4 works exactly like an NIST client should. Boots with
Windows, sets the clock, writes the correction to a log file, and totally
exits... all silently. Achron could get gnasty when the computer started
with no Internet connection, so I'm pleased to get rid of it! Thanks!
NotePad++: I have already tried NotePad++ a few times. I consider it a
programming editor and/or a "heavy duty" text editor. It really deserves a
separate category from my favorites, BDV and MetaPad. MetaPad's EXE file is
94K, and BDV's is 322K. The trash filter in BDV is priceless, as is the
association list.
Website updated! Hover over D4 and find an Easter egg.
Thanks again,,,
