Thanks, nice list. Wanted to have a look at Split File, which you
rated 10, but it seems something is wrong with the site
<http://biphome.spray.se/mason40/download.html>
I get to the download page, Opera shows the leading text indicating a
download link present ("Download Splitfile 2.0 here:") but no link is
visible. IE only shows a blank page. I could always do a search to see
if the file is hosted elsewhere, but imagine searching for "Split
File" and finding the right one.... So if you know an alternative
link, or if not - full name of the author (Mason something?) please :)

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

Bjorn,

I goofed.

There are 2 "Splitfile" programs, and I linked to the wrong one.

The only link I can find to Berger Laurent's "Splitfile" is here:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/splitext.html

This link doesn't work for me right now, but may work for you.

Sorry for the bad link. I will correct it as soon as I find a reliable link.

FWIW I just tried it with IE6. No problems with accessing. There is a
graphic of a floppy to download the program (but my security settings would
not permit the download - I've no idea why). Tried it with Netscape - no
problems accessing or downloading.

We all do from time to time, and sometimes even twice in a row, like
first the wrong bad link and then the correct bad link...lol :)

Nope. Tried a Google search for "Split Files Shell Extension" (exact
match) which gave many hits (>5 pages) - but the many download pages I
visited all pointed their download links to the programs home at
<space.dolphin.free.fr>, which gives a no-permission error.

Btw, on my Google tour around the globe - I ran across another
program, not a shell ext, but looks simpel and efficient w/
a no-install 124KB exe <http://black_giant.tripod.com/splitfile.html>
:)

OK, thanks for the feedback...although as I am sure you have seen by
now - it turned out it Bob supplied the wrong URL. But as you
probably also have seen, the correct one did not work either. This is
just one of those days ;).

A further warning for your useful site.
The link to the best Form Maker ("Form Tool 4.0") point to your HD
instead of the app. site.

Thanks for your work

I've tried many file splitters, but nothing beats a shell extension for
quick and easy splitting and re-assembling files.

If you would like, I can e-mail you the program. It's very, very small.

UGH! Imsi pulled the free version! Unless I can find someone to host it
(hint hint) it's coming down.
Thanks for your work

Most welcome!

Suggestion for making points:

o Help/Documentation
o Changes to the system are documented
o No traces left after uninstall
o Program will be further developed / Bugs will be fixed

With exact names? All the time I guess (or is my comprehension of the
English language failing me here?)

Thanks Bob I would, have just sent you an e-mail :)

Well thanks Andreas!

Of course I can't list all positives and negatives, but your ideas are good.

My most treasured programs are "No-install, 1 small EXE file" that don't
make any changes to the system. There are several on my list that are just
that way.

AFAIK 1.3.0.196 is the one which times out, .195 is the last good one.

It is .195, and does not time out. I keep forgetting to change that! Thanks
for reminding me.

Is X-Setup still freeware?

From the X-Setup EULA available at
<http://www.x-setup.net/downloads/eula.asp>:

"The software is either licensed as "freeware" or "shareware",
depending on the environment it is used in.

The software is "freeware" for: Home users (using the computers for
personal hobby or recreational use); Government controlled education
institutions; Non-profit organizations; charity organizations;
Public libraries. The term "freeware" means, you are allowed to use
the software at no cost. It is not necessary to purchase a license
for it.

If your environment does not fit in the noted environments, you are
considered as a commercial institution and the software is licensed
to you as "shareware". The term "shareware" means, you can test the
software for up to 30 days. After those 30 days you either have to
purchase a license for it or stop using the software and remove it
from your storage device(s) immediately. Unregistered use of X-Setup
Pro after the 30-day evaluation period is in violation of
international copyright laws."
