Works crashing

New computer--less than 1 month old. Installed Office 2003 (student edition) about 2 weeks in. About a week ago, Microsoft Works Word Processor started crashing constantly--within 1-2 minutes of opening it. I tried System Restore (did no good). I tried the manufacturer's Customer Service line (told me to reinstall, did no good, and of course there was some communication problem as the other person was in Istanbul). I tried downloading updates, which worked for one day. Now, it's crashing again, and my brand new computer is essentially useless to me. I can't afford to call Microsoft, I've tried every free thing I can think of, and I'm about to go insane trying to make my brand new computer do one, simple thing--just not crash while I try to take notes in Works. ANY AND ALL help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi 2of3cs:

Here are a few things to try:

First start Word using the /a switch and see if the error occurs. Go
to Start/Run and run:

Winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If the error doesn't occur then chances are you have an add-in
causing trouble. Take a look under
Tools/Templates and Add-ins and see if there are any global
templates/add-ins listed. If any are found locate the files and move
them out of the folder to prevent them from loading when Word starts.

Global templates/add-ins will be located in either your Word Startup
folder or Office\Startup folder. The location of the Word Startup
folder can be found under Tools/Options/File Locations. The
Office\Startup folder is located in the Office installation path.

- Obtain an updated printer driver from the manufacturer's web site
and see if that resolves the issue

- If you use Norton AV, in Norton select Options and in the
Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

It may be that Com-Add ins cause a problem. To troubleshoot this go
to Tools > Modify > Commands > Tools > Com -Add ins, drag this to a
menu of your choice. Click on this, are there entries? Try unchecking
them.
Also consider this information:

WD2002: Some COM Add-Ins Are Not Listed in COM Add-Ins
Dialog Box

Good luck, hope this helps.
