Word Won't Launch

Here's an oddity. When I try to start Word, I get the usual start-up screen
showing user ID and software code string, but it goes no further. If I
launch Task Manager using CTRL/ALT/DEL in an attempt to shut down Word and
try again, I find that it doesn't show up in the list of applications but it
does appear as a 'Process', using around 6MB.
These symptoms have started only today after years of trouble-free Wording.

Many thanks for the prompt and comprehensive reply. I got most of the way
through the advice in the first link when I realised there was also a similar
problem with Excel. On a hunch, and prompted by something in your advice, I
removed Norton Internet Security 2007, and this seems to have cleared all
symptoms. All I have to do now is reinstall Norton with my fingers crossed!

When you do, uncheck its office plug-in.

A follow-up query for Graahm Mayor - Norton does indeed seem to slow
everything down, and I'd love to take your advice about de-selecting the
Office element(s). (For example, it insists on scanning Word and Excel
documents I have recently created before loading them). Surely the
'gatekeeper' function of the firewall ought to be enough? But I can't find
out how to do that (clearly, Norton don't want to make it simple!). Any
advice gratefully received.

I gave up with Norton ages ago, but the application has featured an Office
Plug-in which could be switched off from its options. With some versions of
the Norton product it was necessary to unregister the calling DLL by running
the following command line from Windows > Start > Run - e.g.:

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
or
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton systemworks\norton
antivirus\officeav.dll"
