Word 2000 won't run

I have a new computer Dell Latitude D620 with WinXP Pro and I have migrated
from a Dell Latitude D600 with Win 2000. I reinstalled office 2000 from the
install CD and it worked but gave errors. I then went to Office update and
installed SR3. Now Word comes up in the task bar but won't show on the
desktop. If I just start Word without a document I need to use CTRL+ALT+DEL
to close it. If I try to display a document I can right click and close.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling office with no improvement.
I tried renaming Normal.dot in docs and settings and deleting it in copies
with no effect.
Excel comes up with an Automation error Unspecified error but runs after that.
Access seems to work OK.
Outlook isn't installed but was before the reinstall attempt.

If Office 2000 is an OEM version (came installed on your earlier computer),
then it is not licensed for your new computer. That would not necessarily
account for errors, but it is something to think about, especially since
that version is already two (and about to be three) versions old and will no
longer be supported once Office 2007 ships.

For a possible solution to your problems, however, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.

When you start Word and it minimizes to the Taskbar, what commands do you
see when you right-click on the Taskbar button? If they include Maximize and
Restore (Minimize is dimmed), then Word is evidently set to start minimized,
and Maximize should open the window. If they include Minimize and Maximize
(Restore is disabled), then Word is opening in a Normal window that is off
the desktop. To bring it back, open any other window, then right-click on an
empty area of the Taskbar and choose Cascade or one of the tile options.
Once the Word window is back in view, use the mouse to move and size it to
your preference, then quit Word. When you restart, the window should be
where you left it.
