Word turn documents into web pages

Word keeps turning documents I create into web pages--
this changes my ability to format them...and they come up
under IE instead of the Word icon when I open them. How
can I prevent this?
 
Go to File > Save As. Change the Save As Type from 'Web page' to 'Word
document'
