Word pad files to Microsoft Word

All of my Microsoft Word files have dchanged to Word Pad files. Can some one
tell me what caused this and how can I change it back to Microsoft Word doc.
I am using Office 2003

Do the file names still end with .doc? If so, proceed as follows: Open one of your erstwhile Word files by right-clicking on the icon and selecting 'Open With'. Choose Microsoft Word as the program to use, and put a checkmark in 'Always use the selected program to open this type of file'.

Do the file names end in something other than .doc? If so, read this article from the Microsoft knowledgebase:

Thank you I thought for sure I would have to go to each file. However I opend
up one file as you suggested and all files were changed. Do you have any
thought as to what would have caused this chage?

since you seem to very knowledable here is another situation
I am using Windows XP with Office 2003. I constantly get this error message
can some one determine what is causing this message, and how fix the
problem?? I t seems to refer to Internet Explorer
