Word max File size!

T

Troy G.

I am using Word 2003 on a Windows XP Machine. I have a user that has
created a very large Word File, about 511 MB. She can no longer open the
document. She has added hundreds of images that are 1mb each, obviously
she will have to learn to add s,maller images but that sthe next battle.

I'm assuming it has either surpased the max file size of word or it may
be a limitation of the computer, how ever I have a Gig of RAM on my
system and it doe snot open either.

Is there a max file size for word?
Is there any way for me to extract some of those pictures from the doc
or compress the images without opening the doc in word?

Please advise...

There is a max file size of 32Mb for text-only documents. Images can be
larger. For large files with images the general recommendation is to insert
the images as links rather than incorporating them in the file.

Word on Windows XP can open files up to about 2 GB if the disk format is
NTFS.

512 MB files should open "eventually", but it may take several minutes.

However, it sounds as though that file has become corrupted (anyone jamming
hundreds of large images into a single document is likely to corrupt it in
the process). If that's the case, she's pooched it: there's no way back if
you can't get it open.

If you have a copy of Word 2000 hanging around, that may be worth a try.
Word 2000 will often open documents Word 2003 can't.

Cheers
