Word freezes when saving

I have a user using Word 2000 on Windows XP. When he
saves a document, Word freezes for 30 seconds to a minute
while the document saves. He can switch to other
applications while Word is frozen, but he cannot use Word
until it finishes saving the doc. He does not have this
problem with other MS Office apps, just Word. This is on
a brand new Dell D600 laptop with plenty of hard disk
space and plenty of RAM.

Any ideas?

Norton AV? Chances are its the NortonAV Office plug-in. Turn it off.

We are using Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition. Looks
like it works slightly differently than NAV?

Same problem, different solution. Here's how Office MVP Beth Melton explains
it:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
