Word Formatting Still Doesn't Apply

This problem has been around for a long, long time. When you select all the
text in a document, the name of the style showing disappears because there is
more than one style.

But when you type Normal in the box and hit enter, Normal is NOT applied
throughout the document. I don't know if this problem occurs only when
English text is mixed with Japanese text, but even when it is, the formatting
style is NOT applied to the English text. This is really frustrating.

Which version of Word are we discussing?
