Word 2003 - Apply Style - Not consistent

P

Paula

We have a style that was created that changes paragraphs to a certain line
spacing, indent, and the font to Book Antigua 12. It is a paragraph style.

When we apply the style to an existing paragraph that contains concentrated
underlined text on five consecutive lines of text, the underlining is removed.
If we apply the style to an existing paragraph that contains underlined text
and the underlined text is spread out throughout the paragraph and not on 5
consecutive lines, the underline is not removed. All of the underlined text
reads the same.

This same problem occurs even is we apply the built-in styles from Word,
such as Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Paula,

That's "by design"...

If some kind of manual character formatting ("underline" in your case) is
applied to less than 50% of the characters in the paragraph, it's kept when
you apply another paragraph style.
If it's applied to more than 50%, it's removed.

If you apply a paragraph style to more than one paragraph, manual formatting
is removed in any case.

If you replace the current paragraph style with another paragraph style
through "Find/Replace", the manual formatting is kept (whether or not it's
applied to 50% of the text).

Admittedly, it's a bit confusing... but once you know the rules, you can
usually achieve what you want to achieve.

Regards,
Klaus

Sorry, that's just wrong. Even I don't know the rules... and often have to
undo and try again, until I get what I want.

Create a a character style that applies underlining - Char_Under.
Use the Find/Replace to look for underlined text, replace it with No
underline + your new character style (Char_Under).
Then, when you will apply the paragraph styles, the underlining will stick,
regardless of the % of the paragraph being underlined.

Thank you, Jean. We will try that.
