Word formatting messed up, bug or setting?

hi all,

I was at a friend's tonight trying to show her how to use MSWord, she
is using WindowsXP Home with the Works Suite 2002 and when opening
Word and typing some text, then trying to "center" or change fonts the
behavior is as folllows:

highlighted top line chose large font and bold, underline, etc. and
"center", the entire document "centers" and takes on the attributes
of the font settings, in this case it was Arial 48pt, I would then hit
the "undo" button and all would change back except that text which was
originally highlighted.

I then tried to change the line below that and the same thing
happened, but it would affect only all the line below the highlighted
line, taking on the attributes once again of the previous line,
hitting the "undo" again would return the rest of the document to the
previous size and face.

I tried "detecting and fixing" the installation, but afterward, it
still acted the same.

Is this a bug or does she have a setting somewhere that is causing
this? I didn't look to see if she had installed any service packs.
Probalby not though.

thanks,
niteowl

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm for
the explanation. Then tell your friend that unless she is starting Word from
the Works Task Launcher, she should uninstall the Microsoft Works Suite
Add-in for Word (through Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs) since it is
responsible for a lot of this nonsense (and a lot of other problems).
