Word documents are saved as WordPad documents. Help!

At some point, settings on my computer were changed, and I can't seem
to change them back.

I have Windows XP Pro and Word 97. At some point (several months ago)
all my Word docs began to be saved as Word Pad docs. If all of the
formatting was also saved, I wouldn't worry about it, but that's not
the case.

In the time since, I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled XP
and the Office 97 program (including all updates and SP's for both),
and STILL all docs are saved in the aforementioned WordPad format. If
this was the only problem in my computing life, I would just format
the hard drive and begin/again, but I have about 5 years of my life in
all the nooks and crannies of this 120 GB drive (not to mention the
other two data drives), and I just want Word to save docs as Word
docs.

HELP!

Is there a registry setting? I'll do what it takes. I'll swallow the
medicine. I have usually been able to fix my own and others' PC's,
but I am stumped.

This is just weird. Once again, Help!

Not sure if this is it or not, but try "Tools", "Options", click the "Save"
TAB and see what the default Word file save type is set for. Is it set to
"Word documents (.doc)"?
