Word 97 crashes in Windows XP

I have a laptop using XP Home and I have Word 97 crashes. I went to
Updates for Office 97 at MS but didn't see anything that addresses
this.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have been using word with Win XP for a long time without any problems
whatsoever.

It may be worthwhile unistalling word and reinstalling it.

I have Office 97 installed on my laptop without any updates what so ever and
have not had one bit of problem with it. As REX has suggested Try
Reinstalling.

You could try finding and deleting the file "normal.dot" - Word will
regenerate it when it next loads.

winword /a starts word without loading normal.dot. One can test if it's a corrupted normal.dotr or not by typing in Start Run
winword /a
if it doesn't crash now then normal.dot or another template is to blame.
