How do I disable the auto-date in a Word document?

I have a large doc created in an earlier version of Word, which contained
many dates that were added using shift+alt+d. When I opened this doc in my
new version of Word it had automatically updated all dates to today's date! I
must be able to disable this feature and hopefully restore all the original
dates in the doc.

I also noticed that when I transferred all my data from my old harddrive to
my new PC that all the "modified" dates were changed to the new date. This is
unsettling since I've only moved these files and haven't actually modified
them?

You'll need to replace the field that displays the system date with one that
displays the creation date of the document. Open each document and press
Alt+F9 to show the field codes. Change the DATE (or possibly TIME) part to
CREATEDATE. Press F9 to update. Press Alt+F9 again to hide field codes.

I suspect there is nothing you can do about that behavior.

Hi Buzahn,

Stefan's given you one approach, which is fine if the intended date was the date the document was created. If the intended date is
the date the document was last saved (not the new system 'modified' date), you might be better off using a SAVEDATE field to
retrieve that date, then converting the date to plain text by selecting the date and pressing Ctrl-Shift-F9.
